...and just to prove they're still at it, the same client received another of these letters last week offering the same deal, this time for the ".net" version of their address.

Cost to secure domain name: $249
(Retail) cost of Ipod Shuffle: $90 (approx)

ROI of scam? You guessed it - Priceless!

Thanks for your comment Arthur, it's always good to keep as many copies of your data as you can!

Along those lines, I should also mention that when using an online backup service, not only will you be backing up your data offsite, the service provider will also be doing the same, ensuring your data is completely protected.

Great article Dan. The challenge that I see in Australia is educating home PC users that backing up is mandatory. It all comes down to how much you value your data.

I use USB sticks as well and find them very useful but I have also lost them, so they are as you say temporary.

I also use a hard drive at home that keeps a copy of all of my files especially the larger files eg videos and movies. Just like a PC however, external hard drives also have movable parts and can fail, get stolen or get damaged.

For my really important files I use online backup (Carbonite). It takes them offline and I can access them regardless of what happens to my laptop. I can even access them from any PC remotely whenever I need to.

Hey Dan, Great post. I think that developing an authority and dancing the slow dance of building trust and respect with your target market may not be the quick fix but it is definitely a great way to build a solid foundation for your business.

Solid foundations = big structures :-)

<a href="#comment-6" rel="nofollow">@Rick</a>
Thanks for dropping by Rick. I feel you're probably not alone in your desire for anonymity. However, you don't have to use these mediums to tell the world what you're doing or where you are (although I could see a benefit in that for a mobile industry: letting your clients know you're in a particular area if they need your services, for example). Rather you may be able to use them to disperse information your followers may find useful - such as you've a post on that new site of yours!

Cheers

Hey Dan,

Great post. I must admit, I always feel like I am the last person to learn about this sort of stuff. Maybe I prefer the anominity of people not knowing where I am every minute? But with my new site finally up and the great benefits that you show here, maybe I should come out from the cave....
